Framed Vintage Cruise Art
Framed vintage cruise posters are unique in that they mostly consist of vintage advertisements for cruise lines, including the infamous Titanic. Traditional artwork in this category is sparse, and artists who do choose to tinker with cruise ships do so in a style that closely resembles these popular ads. This isn’t a bad thing, however, since all cruise posters are eye-catching, bold, and beautifully detailed.
Advertisements like “Caribbean by Clipper” attract viewers from the get-go. In this particular piece, a woman with sunglasses and her hand on her hip takes center stage. She dons a red-and-white striped sundress and a giant woven hat as well, and has one foot on Jamaica and the other on Puerto Rico. Beneath her read the words “Pan American World Airways.” Another framed vintage cruise art piece titled “Caribbean” is a slightly more detailed ad for “Grace Line.” The advertisement depicts a family on a tropical beach at sunset, with a palm tree swaying in the breeze and a cruise ship floating past in the water. The words “Caribbean and South America Cruises” are written at the bottom of the print.
Artist Manuel Castro takes a different approach in his framed vintage cruise artwork. In his piece “The Farewell,” a black-and-white image of a sinking cruise ship is seen in the background. At the forefront—and in color—are a man and woman embracing, as if saying goodbye to one another. The man wears a butter yellow hat and jacket, while the woman in his arms is wrapped in a brown scarf, a hooded red coat, and a matching red beret.
“Passage Atlantique Blueprint” by Wild Apple Portfolio is another beautiful example of framed vintage cruise art. The words “New York,” “Paris,” and “Lisbon” are written across the top of the print in a font similar to that of the New Yorker magazine. The piece is done solely in white and shades of blue, and features a head-on image of a massive cruise ship.
