Artist John William Waterhouse (born in 1849) was born in Rome. Waterhouse was influenced by his father who worked as a painter. He followed his father’s footsteps and became a painter of literary, historical and classical subjects. He was referred to as "Nino" throughout his life. Waterhouse’s family returned to England in the 1850s. Waterhouse assisted his father in his studio before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1870. His early works were of classical themes in the spirit of Frederic Leighton and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and were exhibited at the Dudley Gallery, the Royal Academy, and the Society of British Artists and. Around 1870s and 1880s, Waterhouse made several trips to Italy and painted genre scenes. In 1883, he got married to Esther Kenworthy then took up residence at the Primrose Hill Studios.
In 1883 Waterhouse elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor even though he primarily painted in oils.. In 1884, he got favorable reviews from his Royal Academy submission Consulting the Oracle; it was bought by Sir Henry Tate. In 1885, he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, and ten years later he was elected as a full member. Waterhouse resigned from the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor in 1889.
