Giulio Romano was also known as Giulio Pippi. He was born in 1492 or 1499 in Rome. He was an architect and Renaissance painter, the principal heir of Raphael, and one of the developers of the Mannerist style. He was apprenticed to Raphael as a child and became so important in Raphael’s workshop such that when Raphael died in 1520, he was named as one of the master’s chief heirs. He also became the principal artistic executor. Giulio completed most of Raphael’s incomplete projects including the Transfiguration. He also did original works including the stoning of St. Stephen and the Madonna and Saints. These made him to develop an anticlassical and highly personal style of painting.
Giulio Romano’s paintings have a sophisticated spontaneity and a childlike freedom. His dynamic paintings are infused with creative energy, intuitive sense of color, and an innate understanding of composition. He unleashed his creativity through the impulsive quality of his approach making the process as important as the painting itself.
In 1524, Giulio went to Mantua, where he completely dominated the artistic affairs of that duchy. He remained here until his death. While in Mantua itself, he did much work in the huge Reggia dei Gonzaga. The most outstanding are the decorations of the Sala di Troia because they look forward to the illusionistic ceiling decorations of the Baroque. He was inspired by the presence of Andrea Mantegna in Mantua. Giulio also built for himself a Mannerist version of the House of Raphael and began the rebuilding of the cathedral. Many galleries provide ready to mount Giulio Romano framed art because of high demand. They can also be found in other finishing options.
