Charles Clyde Ebbets (18 August, 1905 - 14 July, 1978) was an American photography artist born and raised in Gadsden, Alabama. According to his mother, he was quite adventurous at a very young age. This adventurous habit inspired him into photography, owning a camera at the age of 8 after adding it to her mother's bill without her prior approval. In 1920 or thereabout, he left school to work with his father at a time when his family was struggling financially. Ebbets later moved to Montgomery, Alabama, with the focus of earning some income through his camera. He worked there for a while before moving to St. Petersburg, Florida. While there, he got fascinated with the emergence of moving pictures and would later play roles as Wally Renny in films. One characteristic of Ebbets is that he was daring. This took him from sports to being a licensed pilot, but what cut across was his photographic endeavors that saw him capture shots that no photographers would dare.
With his sports knowledge, he landed a job with Jack Dempsey as a photographer and for Miami Daily News as well. In the 1930s, he had become well known in most parts of the US and was having his art featured in publications, including the New York Times. He continued working as a freelance photography artist until 1935 when he joined the Associated Press. His Lunchtime Atop a Skyscraper and Man Asleep on a Girder are some of his most famous works. Several of his images form part of the displays at the Everglades National Park. Others remain documented and are core to the preservation of American history. To date, Charles Clyde Ebbets framed art are available in galleries for interior decoration.
