Pieter (Elder) Brueghel (Born between 1525 and 1530) was born in or near Breda. He was a designer for engravings and a painter. He was based in Netherlands. Brueghel was the greatest member of an important and large family of artists in southern Netherlands. He was active for four generations in the 16th and 17th centuries. A resident of Antwerp for a long time, the center of publishing in the Netherlands and a vibrant commercial capital, he brought a humanizing spirit to traditional subjects and boldly created new ones. His popularity rose very fast due to the continuity of his family’s trade and the industry that developed in prints after his works of art. His influence was widespread and long lasting. As was the norm with many artists, Brueghel visited Italy and after this visit, he began a venerable association with Hieronymus Cock, whose publishing house At the Four Winds in Antwerp, produced prints on a range of subjects, from landscapes to parables. In 1556 Bruegel got engaged at Hieronymus Cock’s house as a designer for engravings. In 1555 he returned to Antwerp via the Alps. This journey resulted into a number of superb drawings of mountain landscapes that have been the center of attraction to date. Brueghle loved what he was doing and could not imagine doing something else. Today, his art is in great demand and they can be found mainly in the form of framed Pieter (Elder) Brueghel art which come ready to hang with all the accessories.
