Framed Vintage African Art
Framed vintage African posters take viewers on an excursion through famous landmarks of Africa, like the ancient pyramids in Cairo and Egypt, along with the wildlife-laden plains of the Serengeti. With its eclectic style, vintage African art has the ability to make any viewer want to jump on a plane and visit the mystic continent for themselves.
Artist Bill James’s popular framed vintage African art piece “Cairo by Air” features an eye-catching mix of fonts and images. The word “Cairo” is printed in mauve across the top of a dusty orange-colored background; at the bottom, “by Air” is written against a strip of black. In the center of the piece, a black silhouette features a man sitting on top of a camel, watching a red and white vintage biplane pass by overhead. Two pyramids sit in front of the man and his camel.
Another interesting piece of framed vintage African artwork is “Cosmopolitan Life in Cairo.” The print is done in the style of a vintage comic book cover, with the title of the work in bright yellow letters across the top; printed at the bottom of the page are the italicized words “Before the Sphinx.” The image in the middle of the piece is unique in that it isn’t what we typically think of when we think of Africa. Two female models or actresses sit on camels in front of a sphinx, while a man draped with a black cloth captures the pair of women on film.
Vintage African art is visually pleasing, and each piece of art is certainly one of a kind. Together, they leave viewers with lasting impressions of deserts and safaris—and a thirst for adventure, too.
