Framed Vintage Theater Art
The theater has long been among mankind’s most ardently adored forms of entertainment. Since the days of Homer’s epics in the great theaters of Athens, theater and theatrical productions have captured the hearts of viewers and aficionados everywhere.
Framed vintage theater posters are a way for lovers of art and aesthetic decor to proudly display and admire this great tradition and pay homage to some of the most famous works to hit the stages of the world.
Theater is a wide – ranging term that encompasses a variety of performance styles and venues. From the great grand operas of Moscow and Paris and Rome, to the ballets of European and American concert halls, to the circuses that roam the country and the sleight – of – hand shows that dazzle casino crowds in Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, the sights and sounds of live performance inspire audiences and artists alike. Framed vintage theater poster art is an art form in and of itself that emulates something of the wonderment and colorful attraction of these many varied venues.
Some of these framed vintage theatre posters in existence are extremely dated relics with undeniable historic appeal. One such piece, a promotional poster for a performance of the opera “Faust” by Charles Gonoud and Jules Barbier, is impossible to date exactly, but its performance at the Theatre Lyrique puts it between 1854 and 1872, the only years the company was in operation. The beautiful block lettering and vintage illustration style of the poster make the painting every bit as much a work of art as the performance itself certainly was.
Another poster, for Puccini’s famed opera “La Boheme,” is equally charming, and arguably more historically relevant. Not only was “Boheme” an iconic work in its own right, but it served as the framework for the game – changing Broadway musical “RENT” by Jonathan Larson, which updated the story to reflect the stuggles of the artistic community of New York City in the 1990s and the epidemic of HIV/AIDS within poor demographics, making “La Boheme” a piece that belongs in every theatre lover’s repertoire.
