When it was built, one century ago, the Titanic was the largest ship and allegedly unsinkable, with FramedArt.com having plenty of framed Titanic prints depicting the passenger liner. While making its maiden voyage to New York City, the ship sank after hitting an iceberg and in excess of 1500 people died.
The Titanic was one of the three ocean liners in the Olympic class and it was designed by Thomas Andrews. The naval architect was also on board when disaster strikes and he lost his life as well.
Capable of carrying more than 2200 passengers it was supposed to navigate the waters of the Atlantic and transport people from Southampton to the United States. The maiden voyage is remembered in framed Titanic prints, with an eclectic mix of passengers abroad. Some of the richest people in Europe wanted to be a part of this memorable moment, but hundreds of poor immigrants were also traveling to America hoping for a better life.
The sheer size of the Titanic and the numerous safety features were supposed to make it unsinkable but the lack of lifeboats had a terrible effect. When the ship sank, only half of the people on board with feet in the live boards and due to commotion and panic, only a third were actually saved. The events were frequently depicted in movies, including the Hollywood blockbuster that won record Academy award trophies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
