Bulgaria was inhabited since prehistoric times and vestiges of the Neolithic period can be found here, with the Greeks and Romans ruling this land. For a brief period of time, the Bulgarian Empire left its mark on this land and even though it succumbed to the relentless aggressions of the Ottomans, some of its structures and landmarks have endured.
