Christmas Stocking Art

Hanging a Christmas stocking by the fireplace has been a holiday tradition for years. Its origins are somewhat unknown but most believe that it is based on a popular legend of a poor but proud man with three unwed daughters that had no dowries. The story goes that Saint Nicholas, whilst on his travels through the man’s village, hears of their plight. He drops three bags of gold down their chimney which happen to fall into the girls’ stockings that were hanging by the fire to dry. So Christmas stocking art captures the long time tradition through a collection of prints featuring the stocking itself or home scenes of fireplaces decorated with stockings for the holidays.
