Wood engraver and draughtsman Samuel Williams (Born 1788) was born in at Colchester, England. He established himself in Colchester, then in 1819 settled in London. He was apprenticed to a printer called J. Marsden but he taught himself how to engrave and draw. Williams chose engraving as his profession. In the early part of his life he painted a few oil pictures and miniatures. Williams loved what he was doing and worked really hard and soon he became known by many as a wood engraver, a specialist in landscapes. He also had a gift of design and he used his own drawings for a high proportion of his cuts. He was producing high quality products as he was being patronized by Benjamin Crosby a publisher, for whom he illustrated a work on natural history in 1810. From his own designs, Williams produced the illustrations to Charlotte Guest, Mabinogion, Prideaux John Selby, James Thomson, The Seasons, Charles Whittingham, Thomas Miller, Mary Trimmer, Scott's Bible, The British Stage, William Hone, Every-Day Book, and The Olio, a weekly magazine. He also used cuts from the designs of others are in the the Waverley Novels, Handbook of Painting by Franz Theodor Kugler, Jerusalem Delivered by Tasso, Jeremiah Holmes Wiffen's edition, John Gibson Lockhart, Spanish Ballads, Henry Hart Milman, Horace, and William Scrope, Deer-stalking. Today, ready to mount framed Samuel Williams art are highly priced by many collectors. He died in 1853 leaving behind a rich legacy. His four sons whom he left behind all became wood engravers and were very successful.
