Frans Snyders (Born 1579 – died 1657) was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He was the first specialist in the animal still life which was a new Flemish form of still life. Snyders was a Baroque artist and was the most-noted painter of animals in the 17th century. He studied under Pieter Brueghel the Younger. Snyders’ subjects included animals in combat, hunting scenes, pantries and still lives of markets. He was able to capture the textures of fur and feathers in the most dramatic way and also capture the play of light on them. As a result of his training and talent, Snyders became a master in 1602 in the Guild of St. Luke, the guild of Antwerp painters. As was the requisite for painters, in 1608, he made a trip to Italy to view its works of art. Just a year later, he became part of a circle that ultimately included Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and Jacob Jordaens; a team that helped to establish Antwerp as an artistic center. In 1610, he married Margriet de Vos, who was the sister of Cornelis and Paul de Vos - two Flemish painters. The artist had a gift for well-balanced, large compositions. His art usually contain a hint of action, but above all, they allowed him to display his skill at organizing a rich variety of shapes, colors, and textures. Framed Frans Snyders art are today highly priced by many discerning collectors because their demand is high. He joined the Romanists in 1572, and in 1628 he became the dean of that society.
