Georges Rouault (Born 1871) was born in Paris, France. He was born into a poor family in Paris and loved art from a young age. His mother noticed his talent and encouraged his love for the arts and provided him with the support he needed. In 1885, the 14-year-old artist embarked on an apprenticeship. He started off as a restorer and glass painter, which lasted for five years. This early experience as a restorer and glass painter has been considered as a likely source of the glowing colors and the heavy black contouring, likened to leaded glass that’s the characteristic of his mature painting style. In the course of his apprenticeship, Rouault also attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts. At the age of 20, he entered the official art school of France, the École des Beaux-Arts. There he studied under Moreau Gustave and became the favorite student. He worked as a printmaker, painter, maker of stained glass and ceramicist, who, drawing inspiration from French masters of old times, united secular and religious traditions that were sidelined since the Renaissance. Rouault’s works were studied by German artists from Dresden, and the studies later formed the foundation of expressionism. His earliest works show a symbolism in the use of color that shows Moreau's influence. In fact, upon the death of Moreau in 1898, He (Rouault) was nominated to be the leading curator of the Moreau Museum which was located in Paris. He produced many pieces of art, some of which can today be seen as framed Georges Rouault art hanging on many walls around the world.
