For the last more than 30 years he has been living in San Francisco. In the 1990s, he began working with color fields which he punctuated by hieroglyphics which were simple and almost childlike. Over time, Rivera has broken down these fields and is now he’s juxtaposing large areas of color to create images that glow with pure sensation. In 2005, exhibition of Rivera’s works on paper and retrospective paintings was held at the Ex-Convento del Carmen in Guadalajara. Rivera is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards. Rivera’s works are celebrated nationally for their intense emotional content and their unique, personal symbology. His paintings combine the iconography and palette of the indigenous cultural heritage of Mexico with classic Abstraction techniques of Post-War America. The paintings articulate a poetic narrative and also express Rivera’s pure delight in working the medium of oil paint.
