Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 – December 26, 1909) was a reputable American artist who focused on creating art mainly on Old American West, with most of his works portraying elements from the final quarter of the 19th century. He was a painter, illustrator, and writer whose artistic works sold far and wide and covered diverse topics, including American Indians and cowboys. Remington was born in Canton, New York. He studied at the Vermont Episcopal Institute when his family moved to Ogdensburg, New York.
When his parents took him to the institute, they expected that he would later join the military, but that's also the place he got his first drawing lessons. Remington attended Yale University's art school. While there, Remington enjoyed making drawings of action activities.
At the age of 19, he moved West to Montana. He continued creating sketches, although at the onset his works still looked amateurish and cartoonish. Remington got married in 1884 and after a short period, his wife left him, and he began painting more seriously. Not long after his wife left, his works got more famous and sold widely. He later studied at the Art Students League of New York and continued to refine his artistic talents.
Harper's Weekly commissioned him in 1886 and he started working for several other magazines, including Outing. Remington created his art in ink and wash and would later start using watercolors. He created several artworks that sold widely and made a number of trips to diverse locations, including Canada. His works were exhibited in diverse places such as National Academy of Design. Remington later made portraits of soldiers who were fighting in the West and strengthened his working relationship with Harper's Weekly, seeing him gain a lot of success. He was part of the "Golden Age" and he became the leading Western Illustrator. He had a naturalistic style but also created art using the impressionistic style.
His works have sold widely and are also found in galleries and collections worldwide. Framed Frederic Remington art are also available in galleries and a host of other dealerships in the U.S. among other locations.
