Rex Ray (September 11, 1956 – February 9, 2015) was a Germany-born American artist who specialized in collage and graphic design. He was born Michael Patterson. Ray was brought up in Colorado Springs before he relocated to San Francisco in 1981. Ray’s contributions in San Francisco Bay Area art scene are reckoned with and he’s widely respected for his collage works. Even while employing his unique styles in art making, he's known for his use of digital art, becoming among the first few to fully embrace the approach. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute after which he worked as a digital graphics designer for a number of organizations. He embraced graphic software programs to create his work and was mainly drawing her design concepts from his imaginations.
Early 1990s saw him return to painting, using a unique style characterized with parabolic line forms and a variety of psychedelic pop art visual imagery. He embraced diverse art making approaches, including collages. Ray’s creative pieces have been widely displayed in diverse locations, including Akron Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, San Jose Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and Crocker Art Museum. He has worked for a number of high profile companies, including Apple, Dreamworks, Crown Books, Matador Records, and more.
Ray has several design works to his name and has widely sold his artistic works to a number of individuals and companies. Because of the high demand for his creative pieces, several galleries stock ready to mount framed Rex Ray art while others are availed in a variety of other finishing options.
