Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (15 November, 1887 – 6 March, 1986) was an American artist known for her large format floral paintings. She used abstract style to deliver self-expressing and pure still-life images. O'Keeffe was first taught how to draw by her school teacher. She also received watercolor instructions at home from a local artist. Throughout her formal education, teachers always appreciated her artistic abilities and encouraged her on. O'Keeffe later graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received several top honors in recognition of her artistic prowess. In 1907, she joined the Art Student League in New York, receiving a scholarship. After completing her studies, she worked in Texas as a drawing supervisor from 1913 to 1918. O'Keeffe’s work took a lot of her time, making it difficult for her to paint enough. She decided to quit and focus on painting and drawing charcoal images. Because of inadequate marketing, she didn’t make a breakthrough. She would only rise to fame in 1923 after her friend forwarded her works for display at Anderson Galleries against her will. The following year, she did a large flower painting that gave her recognition as a painter.
O'Keeffe then painted constantly for 12 years while living in Shelton Hotel, New York. She later grew a desire to travel in order to explore more in art and life in general. When she traveled to New Mexico, she fell in love with the place and would make trips there every summer. O'Keeffe would later move to New Mexico permanently in 1946 after her husband passed on. She lived there for a few years and later made a trip to Mexico where she met artists such as Frieda Kahlo, Miguel Covarrubias, and Diego Rivera. In the 1950s and 60s, her fame grew and she continued displaying her work and traveling across the globe. Her art won her several awards and numerous honors.
