Georg C. Oeder (Born 1728) was born in Ansbach. At an early age, he was able to produce images that were admired by many. Those who viewed his art encouraged him to consider a career in arts. He also worked towards becoming an artist. He became a botanist, economist, medical doctor and social reformer. Currently, his art, especially the framed Georg C. Oeder art, can be seen in several museums, galleries, institution and homes around the world. His art is highly priced by many discriminating collectors because they can be used to decorate any space and are also inspiring. His name features prominently in the initiation of the plate work Flora Danica. Beginning 1753, Oeder took part in the publication of Flora Danica, a botanical plate work. This project was planned at first to cover all fungi and plants including lichens and bryophytes found in the crown lands of the Danish king – Oldenburg-Delmenhorst, Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein and Norway– with its parts of the empire - the Faroe Islands, North Atlantic Iceland, and Greenland. During the years from 1758 to 1760, he visited Norway’s mountain regions up to Trondheim and within a short time, he had been known by many clients in this region and his art sold in large numbers. Oeder studied medicine under Albrecht von Haller at the University of Göttingen. He then chose to settle as a doctor of medicine in Schleswig. The University of Copenhagen was reluctant to employ him because he was a foreigner. They resisted his appointment in an ordinary chair and he was appointed Royal Professor (Professor botanices regius).
