Gustave Moreau (Born 1826) was born in Paris. He died of stomach ulcer on 18 April 1898. During his lifetime, he produced more than 8,000 drawings, watercolors and paintings, many of which are on display in Paris' National Museum. The museum began operation in 1903 and is in his former workshop. Moreau was a leading figure in painting during his time with an emphasis on the illustration of mythological and biblical figures. His art appealed to the imaginations of some Symbolist artists and writers. He was regarded as a forerunner of Surrealism. In fact Moreau’s work influenced the next generation of Symbolists, more so Jean Delville and Odilon Redon, the leading figures in Symbolism in the early part of the 20th century in Belgium. Moreau initially studied under the guidance of Picot François Édouard and became a friend of Chassériau Théodore, whose work strongly influenced his own. He’s known for his mystical and strange works, often portraying scenes from religion or mythology. Although his art admired in his time, Moreau fell out of favor until the 1960s, when the interest in his art was revived. Since then, the demand for his art rose and even today, framed Gustave Moreau art is selling in large numbers. He instructed Georges Rouault and Henri Matisse, two famous French artists. Moreau became a professor at Paris' School of Fine Arts in October 1891. As a painter, his art appealed to the minds of some Symbolist artists and writers. His art is available in both online and physical stores. They are highly priced by many collectors.
