Johan Barthold Jongkind, (Born 1819) was born in Lattrop, Netherlands. At the age of 16 he left school to find employment so as to eke a living. He found job working with a solicitor. He worked here until 1837 when his mother allowed him to leave for The Hague. He first studied at The Hague under the local landscape painters. He also studied at the Drawing Academy and later on became the pupil of Andreas Schelfhout, a famous open-air landscape painter of that time. Andreas initiated him to quick sketching after nature. In this technique, he rendered the full characteristic of nature using a wash summery of colors over solid and nervously constructed drawings. Barthold became a professional printmaker and painter whose informal and small landscapes continued the tradition of the landscapists of the Dutch. His art also motivated the development of Impressionism. In 1846 he decided to move to Paris where he worked under François Picot and Eugène Isabey who was a genre painter. In 1848 and in 1852, he exhibited at the Salon, where he received a medal. While in Paris he met many people, in particular Baudelaire, Daubigny, Rousseau, Nadar, Corot, just to name a few. With his jovial character, Jongkind built up a network of clients and long-lasting friendships with his mentors and viewers. He was particularly fond of the area around Notre-Dame and the banks of the Seine became one of his favorite subjects. Jongkind died on 9th, February 1891 in Côte-Saint-André, leaving behind a legacy of artwork. The framed Johan Barthold Jongkind art are popular to date.
