Steven Johnson (Born 1966) is a musician, spoken word performance artist, author, fine art painter, book maker, and an artist. Critic Carlo McCormick called him the father of “Sexpressionism.” His art has been criticized for using sexual imagery and swastika symbol for the purposes of shock and controversy. He was made a Reverend in the Church of Satan in 1994 by Anton LaVey. His mixed media paintings utilize human blood, beadwork, oil paint, acrylic paint, as well as photographic collage. Johnson emphasizes aesthetic notions of the politics of sexuality and beauty using recontextualized images of human genitalia. His hand-made fine art books consist of bound pages of paintings on canvas; they can weigh up to 70 pounds. Johnson’s public performances consist of piercing, cutting, spoken word rants, and extreme acts of sadomasochism and degradation. He has produced album covers for the bands Faggot and Unveiled, and has released two albums of music and spoken word on Adversary Records. Johnson is inspired by Native American motifs such as Apache Gahn Dancers, the swastika, the landscape of the human body, as well as the images of Native American warriors such as Geronimo. Johnson’s artwork has been collected by the Black Panther Party, Vincent Price, Stephen King, William S. Burroughs, David Cronenberg, Clive Barker, Cornell University, H.R. Giger, Genesis P'Orridge, American Indian Movement, and Lydia Lunch. His art is equal parts political, holistic, satanic, radical, and extremely personal.
Johnson has been the subject of media attention for his subject matter and controversial approach, and in 2002 a documentary was made about him. Framed Steven Johnson art are stocked in many collections because they are in high demand.
