Winslow Homer (1836–1910) was a painter who created American art. His creative works became among the greatest of 19th century. Homer was very passionate about art, creating art and learning from other artists’ works. It was in 1860 that he exhibited his artwork at the National Academy of Design in New York for the first time. During the early days of his career, he created art using oil paintings. His art captured the Civil War, dating back to 1863, with his focus mainly on the effects of the war according to American perspective. At the end of the war, he had several portraits that displayed the war, capturing prisoners and war veterans in the field. Although he was creating great artwork even early in his career, most of them were experimentation, trying out different art forms. He dedicated himself to creating art that he could earn a living from them. Besides creating his own art, he also created illustrations and design works for a number of New York based magazines.
Homer would later dedicate all his summer time to creating art in watercolor, with his subjects being nature inspired. 1880s saw him dedicate more of his time to creating sea themed artwork. His later seascape works became so refined that they gave a clear picture of his subjects, capturing texture and compositions. Homer’s seascapes even had expressions that resonated with sound. He grew in his painting career so much that in the 1890s, he was among the top American painters. He created so many art pieces during his active career and had several of them displayed in galleries and global collections. Many galleries have framed Winslow Homer art for those who want ready to hang art.
