Jean Guichard (Born 1952) is a France-based photographer who’s widely known for photographs of lighthouses. He’s also known for combining nature photography and architecture and his works often portray dramatic scenes. When he was a child, he spent most of his free time in a region in north-west France near the coast (the Brittany). When he became a photographer, he took some of his lighthouse photographs there. Guichard enlisted in the Navy at the age of 19. He travelled through both the Arctic and Atlantic oceans sailing in the ship called Commandant Bourdais. Guichard bought his first camera when he was in Greenland (a Nikon camera) with the money he made from selling photographs. After his service in the Navy, he worked for the minister of the Department of Commerce. He was in charge of documenting the minister’s travels. Guichard became a photojournalist in 1977. He worked for the Sygma agency and in 1984 he transferred to the Gamma agency. At the age of 37, he co-founded the GLMR agency. In 1992 Guichard released his first book about lighthouses, and received the first prize at the Book Fair of Concarneau. His best photographs of lighthouses are the ones he took in the winter months of 1989/1990. And his most famous photograph is that of a lighthouse being hit by a huge wave. He took it on 21 December, 1989, immediately after a storm. Today, framed Jean Guichard art are much admired by many in the art industry. He’s a source of inspiration to many upcoming artists.
