Denton (Born 1857) is an artist who was known for his paintings of fish. He was born and raised in the United States. He’s a self taught artist who travelled widely wit his naturalist father. He fell in love with Indian relics and he collected them on his travels. He also loved the field of ethnography and was also a fan of gemstones and found semiprecious and precious gems and minerals he amassed a large collection of them, many of which he himself cut and polished. Denton traveled extensively in the United States and abroad and he taught himself to draw during these travels. He became the owner of a very valuable collection of American fresh water pearls. There’s one he collected that had an estimated value of $4,000 at the time it was collected. As an adult, the type of life he led gave him the basis to earn a living creatively through his mastery as an artist and naturalist, not to mention being a collector of precious stones. The artist was a naturalist in the broadest sense. He invented a special collection of butterflies and, in fact, his moth and butterfly collection was unparalleled. Later in his life, a large portion of this collection was given to Wellesley College. During one of his travels in the U.K. Denton put together a collection of every moth and butterfly that was known and were native to the British Isles. His aim was to present this collection to the Prince of Wales on his 13th birthday. Denton was a collector of shells, insects of all kinds, and bird eggs and skins. Today framed Denton art is in high demand.
