German painter, Lovis Corinth (1858 – 1925) was born in Gvardeysk, Russia (formerly Tapiau, East Prussia). He’s known for his landscape paintings and dramatic figurative. He underwent a long period of academic/artistic training that took 11 years beginning when he was admitted at the Academy of Königsberg in 1876. From 1880 to 1884, he studied in Munich, where he got training in a Realist approach that emphasized close scrutiny of the human figure. In 1884, he stayed in Antwerp for three month during which time he was influenced by the vitality in Peter Rubens Paul’s painting. Later that year, he moved to Paris where he became a student at the Académie Julian. His dedication and hard work was exceptional and he honed his skills under the guidance of Bouguereau William-Adolphe. When some artists (Impressionists) exhibited and worked in Paris, Corinth was there, but he said he was totally in darkness about their work. Corinth was disappointed when he was rejected within the Parisian art world, so in 1887 he returned to Germany where he got involved in the Secession movement. This was an association whose aim was to protest against the academic schools in Munich and Berlin - it was formed by the painter Max Liebermann. Corinth settled in Berlin in 1901, where he began serious work which frequently involved dramatic treatments of historical, mythological, and religious subjects. He would render the subjects with strong colors and loose brush work that have often been described as Expressionist. His art is today availed through many outlets, mainly in the form of framed Lovis Corinth art.
