Jennie Cooley is an artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She got into licensing in a process that she describes as “going from crawling to winning marathons.” It is a process that took her 20 years. First there were street fairs, gift shows and shops from Seattle to Los Angeles. Next came studio tours, group shows, galleries and then her own galleries in Santa Fe New Mexico on Canyon Road. After some high-profile solo shows she’s running from Santa Fe and Miami to New York. And here comes licensing with the International Licensing and Publishing Show in 2012 in Las Vegas and her tiny booth right across from Dream Works with Star Wars. Jennie Cooley’s work swings from mahjong necklaces to Visa cards to hand blown glass ornaments and somewhere between fun art to fine art in galleries and collections internationally. During a recent interview in her studio in Santa Fe, she said that her art sticks like an ice box magnet. She describes her style as “visual narrative.” She likes a Japanese critic described her work as having “great childlike qualities,” while a Santa Fean magazine compared her art to that of Jenny Holzer - the Pop icon. But Jennie feels her content is somewhere between Gary Trudeau and Henry Darger with some Frida Kahlo also. She’s known as doll maker, painter, and printmaker.
