Mary Calkins is an artist whose work is non-representational, allowing individual interpretation and response. She began studies in 1971, but left to pursue other interests. After several years of self exploration she returned to the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. This renewed commitment resulted in her BFA degree with honors for excellence in painting in Painting. . During this time, she developed an interest in Native American culture, which led her to study at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After completing her formal training, she has been pursuing printmaking and painting full time. Mary combines approaches and techniques for unusual results; the resulting images are rich with color, texture and historical and environmental influences. One of her favorite techniques is the incorporation of collage in her work. Since 1996, Mary has successfully pursued a creative professional career working as an independent artist. She currently works in a studio in a peaceful environment of central Massachusetts woodland which has been her family's home for more than a century. Mary has developed several unique techniques, and is always searching for new ways to combine multiple imagery and mediums. Over the years, she has explored the mediums of photography, painting, and printmaking which can be seen evolving in exciting ways and merging together as her work expands. Her paintings clearly show that she has an affinity for modern abstraction. Her compositions vibrate with emotion and intensity of color and the inventive use of pattern, which coalesces and overlaps into a whole greater than its part. Framed Mary Calkins art are selling in large numbers due to their high quality.
