David Bailey (Born 1938) was born in London, England. He is a photographer known for his fashion, celebrity, and advertising photographs. In 1960, he began photographing for British Vogue, and his celebrity portraiture and fashion work, known for dramatic lighting effects and stark backgrounds, transformed British celebrity and fashion photography. He was created a Commander of the British Empire in 2001. His documentary subjects include Andy Warhol, Luciano Visconti and Cecil Beaton. Books of his photographs include David Bailey: Chasing Rainbows, Box of Pin-ups, Another Image - Papua New Guinea, Goodbye Baby & Amen - A Sarabande for the Sixties, David Bailey, London NWI - Urban Landscapes, David Bailey’s Trouble and Strife, David Bailey’s Rock and Roll Heroes, and Imagine. Bailey did a series of menial jobs before he was enlisted in the Royal Air Force in Malaysia in 1958. A year later and having been interested in photography and art, he apprenticed at the John French Studio before he became a photographer for the British Vogue. His work reflects the British cultural trend of the 1960s which involved breaking down rigid class and antiquated barriers by injecting a “punk” or working-class look into both artistic and clothing products. He became a celebrity and was known for his affairs with several celebrated women, including Catherine Deneuve, the actress and Jean Shrimpton, the model. Bailey produced a number of documentary films and books and directed television commercials. Today, framed David Bailey art are much sought after by many collectors and celebrities. They are also highly priced.
