Apple Framed Art
Apples are a fruit that have been used for thousands of years throughout the world. The apple is the subject of many old, traditional stories; the fruit of the tree of knowledge in the Bible or the fruit ‘for the beautiful one’ in Greek Mythology. Thus the bright crispness of green apples and the contrast of deep burgundy red apples with juicy yellow flesh have been the subject of much framed apple art.
Numerous artists such as Lisa White, Maureen McCarthy, Peggy Thatch Sibley and Loran Speck have all captured this fruit traditionally in framed apple still life paintings. However, they have captured it all in their own way. Lisa White’s pieces always see the subject in shadow, as though there is barely enough light in the room. In contrast, Maureen McCarthy’s artworks appear bright and vibrant as though cast by studio lights.
While apples have been the muse for artwork deep into our ancient history, some artists prefer to capture the fruit in themes from our more recent history, creating framed vintage apple art. The artist Grace Pullen captures days gone by in her piece “Fruit Stand IV” which can take us back to times when you could pick your own fruit fresh off a tree or buy straight from the roadside. Nancy Overton also takes us back, to a time before cardboard and plastic packaging with her piece “Apple Crate Label”.
More modern pieces capture the fruit in contemporary ways, such as the artist Romero Britto who created an abstract framed apple pop art piece called simply “Apple” that plays with bold outlines, patterns and colour. Jason Johnson similarly uses contemporary methods to capture his subjects, he, however, created a series of photographs titled “Vintage Apples I – IV”.
