Framed Mannerism Artwork

The artistic term “mannerism” derives from an Italian word meaning “style” or “manner.” Likewise, the style of framed Mannerism art derived from earlier Italian styles of painting dating back to the Renaissance. What distinguished Mannerism from earlier forms was its highly stylized postures and poses, elongated proportions indicating elegance and fluidity, and its often religious subject material.

El Greco, a Spanish painter, architect, and sculptor, created a wide variety of works of framed mannerism art paintings all centered around highly stylized depictions of traditional religious imagery. These ranged from “Christ Blessing” and “Face of the Christ,” both portraits of Jesus Christ, to “Tears of St. Peter,” “Annunciation,” and “Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane,” all of which illustrated specific Biblical stories using human figures that were elegant, dramatic, and—again—highly stylized.
Rosso Fiorentino, an Italian painter and yet another creator of framer mannerism paintings, utilized the religious imagery of angels in a way that was much less interested in relating Biblical stories and much more interested simply in capturing images that evoked divinely inspired beauty. His “Musical Angel” is a beautiful rendering of a small, juvenile – looking angel with a lute. It is ethereal, elegant, and serene; it is, in short, mannerism at its finest.

Francesco Vanni’s elaborate rendering of “The Nativity” eschews subtlety and realism for a fantastical and awe – inspiring take of the birth of the Christ child as per Biblical tales. While the attention to detail is intricate and staggering, the heavy use of supernatural elements and fantastical subject material make it clear that Vanni was far less interested in creating a believable scene and more in creating a highly stylized look at a phenomenal story.
