Framed Moustache Artwork
Recently there has been a re-emergence in the popularity of facial hair. No longer seen as something of the past, the moustache has once again entered our cultural imagination.
The image of the humble moustache in its many guises alludes to so much of our cultural history and in framed moustache art the viewer is transported to the nostalgic world of the moustache.
Many examples of framed moustache artwork don’t directly involve moustaches themselves. In Sondra Wampler’s Moustache Wax a shaving cup sits on a dresser next to a tin of moustache wax, evoking the moustache through the items it is generally associated with.
The handle bar moustache in its many forms is a particular art in itself. In the framed moustache artwork of Marcus Jules, the handle bar moustache takes centre stage, usually displayed in pure black and white silhouette form, but often in colour and involving both single images and multiple ones. Mustache by Kirsten Emery depicts a number of classic moustache styles in a tall oblong frame.
The moustache correlates to so many things. In their Boston Terrier series, Fab Funky mix the classic handle bar moustache of yesteryear with a bow-tie and monocle, then Photoshop them onto a Boston terrier. Combined with the news print background, the framed moustache artwork takes us back to English gentlemen sipping tea and reading the newspaper in their drawing rooms.
