Framed Navy Art
If you consider yourself a die-hard American patriot, chances are you are at least passingly familiar with the popular decorative and artistic trend of framed Navy posters. If not, you may be surprised to learn that these nostalgic and patriotic posters are on the rise, for a number of reasons, and that they consist of a wide variety of different pieces and styles. Whether historical photographs, reconstructed recruitment posters, or beautiful paintings, they all occupy a unique and widely appealing niche.
The United States Navy dates back well before the days of modern warfare that we now consider, meaning that the genre of framed Navy poster art also reaches back further than you might expect. Beautiful oil paintings like “ ‘Java’ and ‘Constitution’” by Montague Dawson demonstrate that beautiful sailing ships with masts and riggings pre-dated the sleek ocean liners that do battle today, and fought their own battles in ways that provide endless artistic inspiration.
Contrastingly, high-definition and brightly-colored photographs of more modern warfare technology also appear as framed Navy wall posters, as evidenced by pieces like “USS Iowa Firing Guns,” a poster photograph of the titular vessel unleashing firepower as seen from above. There is something at once humbling and inspiring about the raw power of its military fortitude.
For those with more nostalgic inclinations, the old-timey recruiting posters that find their way into the realm of contemporary artwork might hold some interest. The famously iconic “I Want You” poster that features Uncle Sam inviting American citizens to fight for their country is of course recognizable, but more obscure pieces such as one appropriately titled “Navy Recruitment Poster” still possess a quaint patriotic charm.
