Artist James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836) was born to a middle class family in Nantes, France. He studied art at Beaux-Arts in Paris. At a young age, he was leading a fairly unadventurous life but came into contact with the Impressionists who influenced his work. His early paintings are mainly historical. In 1871 he decided to move to London following the crushing French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the subsequent fall of the Paris Commune.
