Francesco Piranesi (1758/59 – 1810) was the eldest son of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. He was an Italian etcher, architect and engraver. Both his father and his older sister Laura were artists and they are the one who taught him engraving. Piranesi learnt a lot from his father as he was assisting him in his work. It was during that time that he also started engraving his own work. Soon he built a following and started receiving his own orders. This made him to start studying with other experts such as Pierre-Adrien, Georg, Jacob Philipp Hackert, and Giovanni Volpato. Piranesi always looked at different methods of creating and presenting images so that the final products were not only unique and attractive but also inspiring. In his quest for inspiration, he accompanied his father on two trips to the ancient Roman ruins in Paestum, Pompeii and Ercolano. What he saw at these places was a constant inspiration to him as they echoed a life that no longer existed. Piranesi always tried to invite viewers to step into her pieces of artwork, and share a moment of pleasure. Piranesi acquired his father's publishing house after his father's death, and was responsible for printing most of the later editions of his father’s prints. The Calcografia Camerale, founded by Pope Gregory XVI, purchased the surviving collection of Piranesi in 1839 and brought them to Rome. Framed Francesco Piranesi art has been a tremendous source of inspiration to many upcoming artists in France, and the whole world.
