To Deborah Colter’s eye, a painting needs to have balance, rhythm, harmony, a spark of magic and life. She says that a great deal of fearless trust is required in the exploration of non-objective abstraction. Deborah chooses to create non-objective paintings because she finds them sincere and gratifying. Her work comes into existence through various combined elements of torn, paint or cut-up bits of painted papers, collage, marks of the hand, scribed or drawn, and sometimes a little bit of magic. The artist seeks an order among chaos, a balance of energy, a continual give and take that swings between the breaking point and equilibrium. In her art, a drawn line, a pattern, a splash of color all meld into a powerful visual language which is bale to captivate the viewer. Deborah is able to create something out of nothing and is able to nurture its transformation into a piece that is alive with color and energy - intrigue is her main objective. Deborah grew up in upstate New York. Her father was an architect by profession and a cartoonist at heart. She must have inherited her artistic talent from her father whose ceaseless work ethic and discipline strongly influenced her own approach to her work. She currently maintains her studio practice on Martha’s Vineyard. Framed Deborah Colter art is a common feature in many buildings around the world. Deborah holds a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her art is widely represented in corporate and private collections throughout the US and overseas.
