Framed Cottonwood Prints

Cottonwood trees are best known for their seeds – aptly named, they are fluffed like cotton in order to float easily on the wind. Due to this easy method of spreading their seeds, cottonwood forests can pop up very quickly. Its leaves are diamond shaped and abundant. Due to their prevalence and unique cottony appearance, framed cottonwood artwork can be a popular choice among artists.

A popular technique that has been adapted by artists is the emphasis on a cottony, blurred portrayal of the leaves. Although cottonwoods typically have diamond shaped leaves, artists prefer to take artistic license in highlighting the namesake of this type of wood in their artwork. Teri Jonas’ “Fall Cottonwoods,” “Winter Cottonwoods,” and Dana Echols “Cottonwood, Jemez, New Mexico” all incorporate this cottony appearance in the leaves of their framed cottonwood portraits.
Other artists choose a more realistic approach. “Yellow Cottonwood” by Chris Vest illustrates the individual leaves of the cottonwood in their true diamond shape. Dick and Diane Stefanich take this realism a step further in their framed cottonwood art “Cottonwood” by depicting a single cottonwood leaf – the diamond shape obvious.

Cottonwoods are also notable for their brilliant yellow hue in the fall season. This time of year is a popular inspiration for artists’ framed cottonwood portrayals. Stunning illustrations such as “Cottonwoods” by Jutta Kaiser, “Isleta Cottonwoods” by David Wander, and countless panoramic images capture the beauty of the autumn cottonwood’s vivid orange and yellow color. The cottonwood is a refreshing image in any landscape, whether it stands alone in a field or in a dense forest.
