Martha Wakefield was born and raised in Maine. She’s, therefore, deeply accustomed to its unforgiving shore and sea-swept lands. She studied at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts. She studied with Jon Imber, Skip Lawrence and Wolf Kahn. She also studied at Artist Professional Toolbox in Boston, Massachusetts, from where she graduated in 2008. Martha also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Vermont, Burlington, and an Associate of Applied Science from Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Her work strives to capture the significance of this world – its ancient and mysterious past, as well as its incessant regeneration and rebirth. She’s held exhibitions in Wild Beauty, Gallery 53, Gloucester, Barb Jackson Gallery, Rockport, Rocky Neck Gallery, Gloucester, Hope Gallery Fine Arts, Bristol, Law and Water Gallery, Gloucester, Kathryn Schultz Gallery, RiverSea Gallery, Dover, Courthouse Gallery, Ellsworth ME, Concord Art Association, Concord, Lasell College, Newton, Nave Gallery Annex, Somerville, Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, Gloucester, Rocky Neck Art Colony Cultural Center, Gloucester, among other places. Martha makes art and teaches it to others after writing about it - it’s more likely than not that the artist dreams of it too. Her internal geography of impression and memory originates in Maine and serves as a launch pad for studies of deep emotions, loss, and love. Artist magazine nominated her as one of five “Artists to Watch” because she has been producing works of astonishing imagination for many years. These include the framed Martha Wakefield art.
