Susan Ball grew up on a farm in England. As a child, she loved to paint watercolor landscapes, beginning a love for plein air without ever having heard of it. Later on in life, she got influenced by artists such as the Russian Landscape painters Shishkin and Levitan, Constable, Rembrandt, Corot and the Impressionists, and many others. Susan became a scientist by profession and was fascinated by the function of plants and their microscopic structure. It is this background that provided an important foundation for her work. However, she later decided to put aside her scientific career and began to paint professionally and captured the wonders of her new home in her impressionistic plein air paintings. Her favorite subject is the Laguna de Santa Rosa, with its tall grasses, ever-changing panorama of oak trees, and shining waters. Her still life studies are also inspired by Sonoma County. Susan finds Heirloom Varieties available at the local market which provides incomparable models for her detailed paintings.
She is a country person and feels that it is a blessing to live in Sonoma County, and that a more beautiful place would be hard to imagine. Susan has been painting in Sonoma County for over 30 years. Over time she moved into loose still-life interpretations and plein air studies. In 2003, she established Graton Gallery together with a group of fellow artists. The Gallery has gained a reputation among those who love art in the area for its quality. Susan’s work can be seen there daily, and she has an annual solo show. She studied with Gil Dellinger, George Strickland, Chester Arnold, and Armand Cabrera. Framed Susan Ball art are in great demand all over the world.
