Studio Voltaire was founded by Aaron Angell (Born 1987) who is also the founder and director of Troy Town Art Pottery which is hosted by Open School East. The main activities of Studio Voltaire are the provision of performances and commissions, affordable studios, a pioneering education programme and a renowned programme of exhibitions. It is an arts organisation that exists to support artistic practices and create a space for reflection, experimentation and thinking. Angell lives and works in London. He is represented in London by Rob Tufnell. His recent solo shows include Rob Tufnell Bumpkin; Croy Nielsen Berlin, Put John Barleycorn in the old brown jug, SPACE, The Devil’s Arse, Leeds Art Gallery, British Art Show 8, and Tate St Ives. In 2014, Angell received the Hospitalfield Autumn Residency Award which was funded by Creative Scotland under their Creative Futures strand. He used production bursary and this residency to prepare for his Studio Voltaire commission supported by Hospitalfield Arts, The Henry Moore Foundation; and the Arts Council England. Studio Voltaire provides multiple entry-points for audiences through various programming practices that foster critical engagement with contemporary culture. The studio presents a new large-scale commission of painting and sculpture by Angell who is interested in marginal forms of image-making and focuses on ceramics as a vehicle for sculpture. Studio Voltaire produces art in a variety of sizes and finishing options, the most popular of which is the framed Studio Voltaire art. Through Studio Voltaire, Angell presents his most ambitious body of work demonstrating the variety of his practice by experimenting with a range of materials and processes that were previously unexplored.
