William McCarthy (Born October 25, 1951) was born in Connecticut. He received a scholarship and studied at Columbus College of Art and Design between 1970 and 1972. After his graduation, he studied Various Graduate Liberal Studies in Printmaking at Wesleyan University from 1988 to 1994. Each of her mysterious and luminous images of rivers, field and trees against sky, evoke a delicate variation of atmosphere and light. The way he arranges the trees - whether standing in large groupings or in pairs or in solitude seem at once to be surprising and yet inevitable, accidental yet formal. All of his paintings are composed from thumbnail sketches, from imagination and from memory. He works from his beautiful basement studio in his home in Connecticut. The solo exhibitions he has attended include those at Sandra Morgan Interiors, Greenwich, Muse Gallery, Columbus, Red Raven Gallery, Lancaster, Wynn- Falconer Gallery, Chatham, Kelher Liddell Gallery, New Haven, Artistically Bent Columbus, and EBK Gallery, West Hartford, among others. McCarthy works on canvas, paper and wood board using several layers of gesso, after which he primes the surface with cadmium red base. He uses a quick sketch using charcoal to lay out the design then he applies the paint. He works in layers using oil color that’s thinned down, building on the layers with glazing techniques; he adjusts the colors and brings up the art to completion before he applies the final coats of varnish. He has also attended several group exhibitions, and his art is found in many collections around the world. Many collectors prefer to stock ready to hang framed William McCarthy art.
