Philip Makanna (Born 1940) holds a Masters degree in Fine Art from the University of California, Berkeley. Originally, he trained as a painter because that’s where his passion was. After graduation, he worked as a painter for a while but developed an interest in sculpture but finally turned the tables and became a teacher in both disciplines. Like so many young boys, the ability of man to fly and airplanes has fascinated him and stayed with him over the years. He used to admire photographs of airplanes he saw in magazines and books. He says that aviation photography inspires him to keep working as it unites two of his great passions in life. He particularly interested in vintage warplanes because of the history associated with them. Not just the history of the earth-shattering world events in which these were involved but the especially interesting history of the men who flew them. Makanna says it’s a mixture of admiration and respect. He has the same feelings toward all the people involved in flying and restoring these machines –the engineers, the owners, the pilots and the mechanics. He adds that it takes a huge amount of effort, time and money to get them flying again. As a young boy, Makanna was taken to many air shows by his father during the late 1960’s and he watched Hurricanes, Spitfires, and a many of other vintage aircraft from the Second World War era. Framed Philip Makanna art are very attractive and are highly priced by many collectors.
