David Knowlton was born in North Hollywood, California in 1941. He was born in a family of artists. His father and mother were both commercial artists. Between 1946 and June of 1959, David lived in Santa Barbara where he was taught tempera, pencil oil, watercolor, and pen & ink techniques by his father. David won a national art contest at the age of 12. He spent much of his time drawing airplanes. David attended the United States Military Academy, West Point, in New York, where he became the Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook. He graduates in 1963 with a BS degree as a 2nd Lieutenant of Engineers in June of 1963. He then proceeded to Paratroop School and completed the training in October 1963. After that he was assigned to Fort Carson, Colorado where he spent much of his spare time painting oils which became his favorite media from childhood. In June 1966, David attended Stanford University and graduated with a Masters degree in Construction in January 1968. David continued to paint whenever time permitted while attending the university. Initially he was painting along the coastlines but later he began painting indoors from photographs. David served as Provincial Engineer Advisor, MACV, at Can Tho, Vietnam. This staff duty allowed him much time to paint and he painted a lot. Many of the paintings were sold directly to American servicemen, while some were sold to patrons on the beach at Santa Barbara, California. Back in the U.S. from October 1969 to June 1970, he served as staff officer at the 7th Engineer Battalion, in Fort Carson, Colorado. Later, from June 1970 until June 1973, he served as student and then as instructor at Fort Belvior, Virginia. At this time, the sales from his artwork rose sharply and he decided to leave the Army. Today, framed and ready to mount David Knowlton art are available in many galleries.
