Juan Gris (Born 1887) was born in Madrid, Spain. He incorporated advertisements and newsprint into his work just like Braque and Picasso. Whereas Braque and Picasso tended to snip advertisements and newsprint into smithereens, however, Gris leaves more of the original pieces of newsprint and advertisements intact, with an aim of preserving the integrity of the originals. He lifts the popular culture into the realm of high art, and this has made him an important forerunner of Dada and Pop artists, joining the likes of Andy Warhol, Stuart Davis, and Marcel Duchamp. He was a renowned sculptor, illustrator and painter. Born José Carmelo Victoriano González-Pérez Carlos, Juan was one of the leading figures in Cubist painting. He was among the visionaries (visual artists, choreographers, poets and musicians) who built pathways among the arts. As some said, he was the only Cubist who was talented enough to make Picasso uncomfortable. Gris preferred the emotion that corrects the rule. His traditional subjects, saturated colors and well-balanced compositions popularized the avant-garde movement. However, his treatment of the picture space was rather radical. His Ballet Russes costumes show his dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration, an idea that became central to contemporary art and gathered momentum during his days. . He was a strong student, but the rigidity of academic life did not appeal to him, so he shifted his focus to the study of art driven by his natural ability in drawing.
