John Bardwell (Born 1832) obtained his bachelors degree from the prestigious Art Center College of Design. He then proceeded to the Otis Art Institute for his post-graduate studies. He worked as a professional artist and illustrator of posters, art and prints for more than 35 years. Bardwell worked for several years as a writer, designer and assistant producer in Hollywood. For nearly 30 years he worked as a designer, freelance artist and ad agency owner. During that time he worked with a wide diversity of corporate and private businesses and with government and civic organizations where his emphasis was on tourism and travel. Bardwell’s illustrations and humor articles appear in national publications. He spent an increasing share of his workday producing prints, fine art, and posters. His prints, art and posters are in public and private collections throughout the U.S. His most recent originals and prints take a humorous look at the world of wine and food, golf and the French. For about 5 years, Bardwell painted and showed in Hawaii, where he ended up owning a gallery on Maui. Today framed John Bardwell art hung in many art galleries, museums and institutions all over the world. Bardwell settled in San Francisco by 1860. He painted in his leisure and owned a Steam Bag Factory. His rare works include the paintings of Yosemite landscapes. Bardwell died in San Francisco in 1899. He left behind a rich legacy that acts as strong inspiration to many upcoming as well as established artists. He lived and painted in the high desert of Nevada and had obviously been influenced by the brilliant sunshine, clear skies, and volcanic origins of the landscape.
