Framed Vintage Zombie Movie Art
The last several years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of zombie-themed work, but framed vintage zombie movie posters can give us a sense of the genre’s roots and how it has evolved over time. Zombie movies can often portray anxieties in society that people are not comfortable discussing openly.
The first well-known zombie films were produced in the 1930s. The framed vintage zombine movie artwork for “Walking Dead,” “Walking Dead Karloff,” and “Walking Dead With Ricardo Cortez” pay tribute to the Art Deco style that was popular at that time with muted color contrasts and occasional use of streamlined sans serif typefaces. “White Zombie” also shows an Art Deco influence, albeit to a lesser degree, as the text is less streamlined, and the color palette shows more variety.
In the 1950s, the zombie movie really started to come into its own, and much of the most renowned framed vintage zombie movie wall art comes from this decade. These typically feature a bright background with the title in red text that appears to drip, reminiscent of dripping blood. “I Drink Your Blood” and “I Bury the Living” are examples of this style. Occasionally film posters were less explicit and used yellow text that appeared to quiver, which can be seen in “Brain Eaters.”
Later zombie movies would often take some stylistic inspiration from previous eras while adding a twist from their own time. For instance, 1979’s “Zombie The Dead Are Among Us!” uses the bold red text from the 1950s, but without the dripping effect. Also, the featured image is gorier than would have been acceptable in previous decades.
