Framed Airport Artwork
When the Wright brothers took that first tentative step into aviation history, no one was to know how much human flight was to shape our futures. The first commercial flight was in 1919 and brought with it the invention of the airport. In framed airport art some of the most recognised airports are depicted through prints of their plans.
The wonder of framed airport artwork is in their simplicity. They are merely coloured prints of airport plans centred on backgrounds of a different colour, pushing the image of the plans into the forefront through the contrast of colours. At the bottom is the airport code in large bold font, the same colour as the plans. Below this is the airport name in smaller type. The plans and the code are synonymous with flying and the aura of the airport permeates out of them.
Collectors of building plans have always been around. The fact that the plans give an aerial point of view makes airport plans ideal as a medium, as they evoke the feeling of flying. This, for obvious reasons, gives added sensation to framed airport art pieces, because the viewer feels themselves hovering over the top of the airport, looking down upon it.
Framed airport artwork includes so many of America’s famous airports and harks back to the history of commercial domestic flights around the U.S. These works, whose use of colour makes the images, strike out at the viewer, offers a signifier to our aviation experiences.
