The name of this rock formation was given in 1851 and it stuck, with modern climbers frequently referring to it as El Cap. There are a couple of possible climbing routes and all of them require a great deal of skill and experience, which explains why for many years it was regarded as impossible to climb.

Only a fraction of those who visit the Yosemite National Park actually make an attempt at climbing the rock, a task that would require several days. The success percentage barely exceeds 50% even in these cases, but due to safety measures there are few fatalities. The vast majority of the tourists are more than happy to admire the rock from its base and take panoramic photographs after using the hiking paths.
