Framed Antelope Canyon Art

At a first glance, this area looks like an arid place and the desert seems to be winning land each year, but things change during monsoon season. Rainwater is relentless in its erosion course and in conjunction with the sub aerial processes, it keeps eating away at the rocks, creating new corridors and deepening existing ones. One of the characteristics of this canyon is that the hard rock edges have been smoothened over the years, giving it the familiar shape we can now admire in Upper Antelope Canyon.

Flooding occurs rarely in the canyon, but when it does an entire section needs to be closed, while the elements continue their endless erosion process. The Navajo Nation manages the canyon and does a fine job, with the number of tourists increasing since private companies were allowed to offer services in 1987.
