Framed Modern Flower Paintings

Sometimes the flowers themselves are not exactly the subjects of framed modern flower art pieces. Flower paintings can be used to emphasize a pattern in the leaves. Melody Hogan’s “Transitional Floral” series is an example of this. She shows flower imagery in different shades of blue, which minimizes the contrast between objects and shows the natural patterns in flowers. Kristin Emery uses a similar approach with the color gray in her “Warm Gray Flowers” paintings. Donald Sultan uses flowers to emphasize a color contrast in works such as “Four Reds May 7.”

Flowers can also be used in art for their resemblance or reference to other objects. Kate Birch does this in “Fan Dance I,” where she implicitly compares the flowers shown in the piece to dancing fans. The “Kimono” series by Jodi Fuchs portrays flowers, but the title hints that the image could be a pattern on a kimono.
