Jeff Williams (Born in 1976) was raised in Plymouth, Michigan but was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and a MFA from Syracuse University. He currently lives and works in Austin and Brooklyn, NY. He was an artist-in-residence and a fellow in The Museum of Fine Arts Houston at the Core Program from 2006 to 2008. He received the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. And in 2012 he was awarded the Texas Prize. The panel giving this award comprised of Katrina Moorhead, Aspen Art Museum, CO; Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, DE; Philipp Kaiser, New Museum, NYC, ; Gary Carrion-Murayari, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX and Bill Arning. His art is concerned with the properties of materials and how they relate to each other and over time. Williams alters and combines industrial waste and architectural materials as well as quotidian objects and geological formations in ways that accelerate and induce processes of decay and erosion and illuminate the sensory and elementary specificity of the materials. His recent two-person and solo exhibitions include such locations such as Microwave Mint at Helper in Brooklyn, Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, and 1708 Gallery in Richmond, VA. Currently he works with The University of Texas as an assistant professor of sculpture. His art are predicated upon scientific theories, engineering principles, and bodies of knowledge, such as ideas in physics or processes of chemical reactions.
